Sizing a boiler for a Carbon County home is not a calculation a contractor can borrow from somewhere else and adjust. Homes in Carbon County, WY run heat about ten months a year, from September through June. The burner, the heat exchanger, and the ignition system cycle through most of the calendar year, and the parts that carry that load accumulate wear at a pace that correct sizing slows and poor sizing accelerates. A contractor quoting a replacement has to establish the actual heat loss of the house before committing to equipment, because a unit that is too small runs nearly continuously at the coldest points of the season and fails earlier on the components that cycle most.

Existing ductwork and piping in a house this age were designed around whatever heated it first, and a boiler going in today draws on infrastructure built for something else. Half the homes in Carbon County, Wyoming were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between original construction and current equipment is what a contractor works through before a boiler installation can move forward: what the existing distribution system will and will not carry, and whether the plumbing it connects to is still serviceable. A house whose bones predate the equipment by that margin often needs ductwork or piping assessed before a unit is ever ordered.

What Gets Installed With a New Boiler

The boiler itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the heart of what a contractor sets in place. Paired with it is the expansion tank, which mounts nearby and absorbs pressure changes as water heats. Together these two pieces form the core of what a homeowner is buying.

From the boiler, supply and return pipes run through the house to the heat emitters, whether those are baseboards, radiators, or in-floor tubing embedded in the subfloor. A circulator pump, mounted on the piping close to the boiler, pushes hot water through that loop. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner direct control over the whole system.

The drawing shows a representative layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
